G1 (Minor) Geomagnetic Storming Likely to Continue into 16 June

G1 (Minor) Geomagnetic Storming Likely to Continue into 16 June
published: Friday, June 17, 2016 02:37 UTC

A G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect for the rest of the 15 June UTC-day; and is now in effect for the 16 June UTC-day. A stronger than expected interaction with a coronal hole high speed stream on 15 June led to a 9 hours of geomagnetic response - to include a period of G2 (Moderate) storming from 15/1800-2100 UTC (15/1400-1700 ET) and a period of G1 (Minor) storming from 16/0000-0300 UTC (15/2000-2300 ET). While geomagnetic storming is not currently in progress and no G1 or higher warning is currently in effect due to an unfavorable solar wind magnetic field orientation, the solar wind environment remains enhanced enough for another likely period of G1 storming at anytime through the 16 June UTC-day - all it would take is a prolonged shift in the solar wind magnetic field to a more favorable orientation.
