G1 (Minor) Storm Levels Reached 17 December 2024

G1 (Minor) Storm Levels Reached 17 December 2024
G1 (Minor) Storm Levels Reached 17 December 2024
published: Tuesday, December 17, 2024 15:50 UTC

An anticipated CME (coronal mass ejection) arrived at Earth during the overnight hours of 16-17 Dec. Despite being a more direct CME arrival than originally forecast, when the CME arrived at Earth it lacked the the necessary magnetic field orientation to ramp up to higher than G1 levels. If the orientation had become favorable (opposite Earth’s magnetic field), conditions could have escalated to higher than G1 levels. Stay informed by visiting our website at https://www.swpc.noaa.gov
